Quick answer

Senna, cascara sagrada and cape aloe are the three classic herbs in herbal colon cleanse formulas. All three contain plant compounds called anthraquinones that gently prompt the bowel to move, supporting relief of occasional constipation. They come from different plants and have different FDA status.

When I sat down to design my formula, I laid these three herbs side by side and asked a simple question: why choose one, when each brings something to the table?

People have used all three for generations. Here is where each comes from, how it works, and why I blended them instead of picking a favorite.

What Makes an Herb Part of a Colon Cleanse?

Some plants add bulk, like psyllium. Some draw in water. Senna, cascara and cape aloe belong to a third group: they nudge the bowel muscles to squeeze and move things along, a bit like giving a slow train a gentle push down the track.

What Is Senna?

Where it comes from: the leaves and pods of Senna alexandrina.

How it works: senna contains sennosides, which prompt the bowel muscles to move, usually within 6 to 12 hours.

Its status: an FDA-approved over-the-counter stimulant laxative ingredient for occasional constipation.

What Is Cascara Sagrada?

Where it comes from: the aged bark of a Pacific Northwest tree. The name means "sacred bark."

How it works: like senna, it contains anthraquinones.

Its status: removed from the FDA's over-the-counter list in 2002 because companies did not submit safety data. Still sold as a dietary supplement. More in cascara sagrada: the herbal colon cleanse bark.

What Is Cape Aloe?

Where it comes from: the Aloe ferox plant. The active part is the yellow sap just under the leaf skin, not the clear gel used on sunburns.

How it works: it also contains anthraquinones.

Its status: removed from the FDA's over-the-counter list in 2002 for the same reason as cascara. Still sold as a dietary supplement.

"A blend lets each herb do a small part instead of asking one herb to do it all."

Why Did I Combine All Three?

Each of these herbs has a long history. Blending them means the formula uses modest amounts of each rather than a large amount of one. That was the balance I wanted.

Why Did I Add Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic, Clove and Barberry?

Dried barberry root, one of the botanicals in Vitality Capsules

The three classic herbs do the main work of supporting regularity. But I cared about comfort too. Ginger has long been used to support digestion. Turmeric, garlic and clove are familiar kitchen botanicals. Barberry root has its own long history in traditional herbal use. Together they round out the formula with digestive comfort and balance in mind.

How Is the Formula Made?

All eight herbs go into one capsule, made in a GMP-certified facility in California. Every batch is third-party tested by an outside lab. It is 100% herbs.

How Can You Use an Herbal Colon Cleanse Well?

  • Take it with your largest meal. It is easier to remember and easier on the stomach.
  • Drink water through the day.
  • Follow the label. More is not better.
  • Do not stack products. A tea plus a capsule plus a powder adds up.

Who Should Check With a Doctor First?

These herbs can cause cramping, and too much can lead to diarrhea, dehydration and low electrolytes. They are not for pregnancy, nursing or children unless a doctor says so. If you take heart medicines, water pills or blood thinners, or have bowel, kidney or heart conditions, talk with your doctor first.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Call your doctor if you notice:

  • A sudden change in your bowel habits
  • Blood in your stool
  • Severe belly pain
  • Weight loss you cannot explain
  • Constipation that lasts more than a couple of weeks

What Questions Do People Ask Most?

What herbs are in a colon cleanse?

The classic three are senna, cascara sagrada and cape aloe. Many formulas add gentler botanicals like ginger.

How long does senna take to work?

Usually 6 to 12 hours, which is why many people take it with an evening meal.

Is cape aloe the same as aloe vera gel?

No. The active part is the yellow sap under the leaf skin. The clear gel is a different part of the plant.
