Betting My Life
(7:14) When I started, I was barely able to walk from my chair to the bathroom.
(8:05) I realized that if I didn’t do something, I wouldn’t even be able to leave the house.
(8:39) The benefits were clear, but the risk was there.
(9:22) I mitigated the risk with a human being to catch me when I fall.
(10:17) Calculate the risk, mitigate it, and commit.
(11:00) Adjustments along the way—eventually could do splits.
(11:29) Flexibility is now better than when I was 11 years old.
(12:02) I can play with grandkids, pop up and down easily.
(12:11) It’s easy now to continue because I need less support.
(12:21) How can I do all these things? I bet my life.
(12:26) What else have I bet my life on? Endless list.
Betting on Harvard
(13:01) I assessed the situation at Harvard and didn’t want to get mired in debt.
(13:35) Harvard does not help people advance from one economic class to the other.
(14:13) I was offered the opportunity to sell books, which had risks.
(15:02) The dean of students said it was beneath the dignity of a Harvard student.
(15:43) I met with the dean of students to mitigate the risk of getting kicked out.
(16:00) Selling books door-to-door had high returns—no need to work during school.
(16:27) I committed, worked 81 hours a week, earned enough money, and didn’t have to work while at Harvard.
Living Off-Campus
(18:01) By junior year, money was running short—found an opportunity to live off-campus.
(18:49) Living off-campus was cheaper than staying at Harvard—money saved.
(19:07) Risk: Living off-campus was dangerous and a distraction.
(19:28) Won the lottery for a private suite with a view—gave it up for off-campus living.
(20:02) Off-campus location was closer to classes, had excellent security, more privacy.
(20:24) Moved off-campus, lived in a tranquil environment—more focused.
Betting on Medical School
(21:22) First year of medical school—betting my life continued.
(21:41) Classes and studying took 80 hours a week.
(22:05) I was receiving a small monthly payment from the government—wasn't enough for food and rent.
(22:31) Decided to eat every other day—saved money, had more time to study, no loans.
(23:35) Continued eating every other day for seven years—excellent health and energy.
